Out with the Old; In with the New

I'm here to announce two changes to the Shadow Academy, a removal and an addition.

Out with the Old: After discussing it with my Praetor Bubba and the EPs, it has been determined that the three IM courses (AIM, MSN, and ICQ) have little to no relevance to the Dark Brotherhood, as IRC and email are the main ways we communicate. As such, we have voted and decided to remove these three courses from the Shadow Academy. So, they are no longer available to take, but they will be back in the future.

In with the New: I am proud to announce the next new Shadow Academy degree. Have you gotten all the Mavens you want? Do you want to step it up to the next level? Well now you can with the first Dark Savant: Leadership and Communication. The requirements can now be found on the SA Degree Requirements Wiki page, but I'll list them here first:

Leadership and Communication:

  • Dark Maven: Leadership

  • IRC Basics

  • IRC Channel Operator

  • Chamber of Justice

  • 2 Electives

  • Practical: At least six months serving as BTL or higher

As you can see, you must have earned the Dark Maven: Leadership degree first, plus passed the three courses and held a leadership position. Now, the new thing is electives. Basically, these are extra courses that you pick from a list. The 85% rule still applies, though, but when you apply for the degree you pick which two courses you would like to use as Electives. The trick is that you can only use a course once. The electives are: (these can be found on the Wiki page as well)

  • AOL Instant Messenger

  • DB Basics

  • ICQ Studies

  • MSN Messenger

  • Sith Alchemy

  • ACC Initiates

  • Marksmanship

  • Safe Computing

  • Dark Jedi Meditation

  • Photoshop

As always, if you have any questions about these changes either post them in the Comments section or send an email to BubbaX (Dacien) and me.

Just out of curiosity, if the IM courses have been "removed," why are they still listed as electives in your report?

Do courses passed count towards Electives? Or must I take new courses and pass them to gain that credit?

Since the electives contain a substantial number of discontinued courses (Safe Computing, Meditation and the various IMs), and some members also have most or all of these courses already, I would conclude that past completions do count.

Just because a course isn't offered anymore doesn't mean it is removed from your passed list, which is why those courses are used for electives. For the arguement of being unfair since newer members can't take those courses, an idea will be implemented this month that gives newer members a set period of time to take old courses no longer offered.

As, like with other courses, you don't have to retake them. If you have already passed the course with at least an 85%, then you're good to go

Cool. I was just curious. Thanks much.
